Ivy Gourd (Kovakai) kootu is a delicious South Indian recipe. which helps me to finish off cooking in less time. This Kootu is a lentil based curry, an authentic and very healthy dish. It is easy to make and an unfailing favorite. This pairs excellent with vathal kuzhambu or poricha kuzhambu rice.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 100 gms Ivy gourd chopped
  • 50 gms Split green gram
  • 2 No Tomatoes finely chopped
  • 1 pinch Turmeric powder
  • 1 no Green chilli
  • 2 tbsp Gingelly oil use cold press
  • 1 stalk Curry leaves
  • ½ tbsp Mustard seeds
  • ½ tbsp Split Black gram
  • 250 ml Water
  • as required Salt

For Grinding

  • 1 pinch Cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tbsp Bengal gram
  • 1 tbsp Black gram
  • 1 Pinch Asafoetida
  • 1 pinch mustard seeds
  • 4-5 Nos Curry leaves

Instructions

  • Grind all the ingredients with sufficient water in to a fine paste
  • cook the split green gram in a vessel with 100 ml of water adding a pinch of turmeric powder and few drops of oil
  • once cooked remove from stove and set aside
  • cook the gourd, tomatoes and green chilli with salt in another vessel with 50 ml of water
  • Once cooked, add the split green gram and the ground ingredients
  • Mix well, cook with sufficient water for few minutes
  • Temper mustard seeds , black gram, curry leaves and asfoetida , add to the kootu
  • serve hot
